For anyone looking for glowing skin, microneedling might be just the incredible treatment option you didn’t know you’ve been looking for.
Of course, this non-surgical procedure, sometimes referred to as collagen induction therapy, can have tremendous benefits beyond simply removing fine lines and rejuvenating the skin. Micro-needling has successfully treated acne scars, removing age spots, reducing large pores, and restoring youthful elasticity to the face. All without much time at the medical aesthetician’s office and little to no downtime.
However, before we delve into a step-by-step of what you can expect during the procedure, let’s unpack how it works.
The simple explanation is that micro-needling stimulates your skin’s natural physiological repair mechanisms. The process causes just enough stress to the epidermis layer of the skin that your body responds by releasing new collagen, increasing healthy circulation, and turning on its natural healing processes. For this reason, micro-needling can be just as effective for treating fine lines and wrinkles as it is for alleviating acne and reducing the size of large pores. It essentially guides your skin as to where to direct its innate healing abilities.
After a member of our team gets you settled, one of our medical aestheticians will begin by applying a relaxing facial cream. This topical solution is infused with multiple vitamins and minerals and contains a formulation that will start to numb the skin to make the rest of the process completely pain-free. After about 20 minutes of relaxing, you’re ready to begin the treatment.
The tool that we use for the micro-needling procedure looks very similar to an everyday pen, which puts many of our clients at ease. It’s incredible how many people are apprehensive about the process because the word needle is in the name. However, as a client, you never have to see any needles during the treatment, and the only discomfort many people feel is possibly a light scratching sensation. Although most clients only ever experience a slight tickle.
Once we get underway, we move the micro-needling tool over the surface of the skin. Having already worked out the areas to focus on for the most optimal results during your initial consultation, we can move pretty quickly. Throughout the process, we apply a powerful rejuvenating serum to the skin just before the instrument passes over. This way, we’re able to infuse the epidermis with extra nutrients that will give it the resources it needs to ensure brilliant healing and restoration. We will generally have to go over each area a few times throughout the process to guarantee we have the coverage we need to be effective. After we have completed the microneedling portion, we apply the powerful rejuvenating serum again to allow your skin to soak up all of the nutrients. The overall treatment process usually takes no more than 60 minutes, and then you’re good to be on your way.
For most clients, their first micro-needling experience will leave them looking like they spent too much time at the beach without any sunscreen. This reaction is entirely normal and is the beginning of your skin starting to employ its potent healing and rejuvenation abilities. As the numbing solution wears off in the hours that follow, it’s also common to feel some slight throbbing under the skin as the blood flows to the surface to begin its restoration work.
Of course, now that your treatment is finished, it’s essential that you support the process by only using gentle moisturizers and cleansers on your skin and by staying out of direct sunlight for the week following the procedure. We also recommend that clients also try to avoid wearing make-up, and if absolutely necessary, only use minimal products to not clog the pores as they heal.
You will also want to give your body a short break while it’s going through the process of restoration. It’s probably advisable to skip the gym altogether, but if you feel compelled to keep moving, opt for low-intensity options for at least the first 24 to 48 hours following your treatment. We also recommended that you stay out of the sauna and avoid the community pools or hot tubs for at least a few days.
The effects of micro-needling are usually apparent quite quickly after the treatment. During the first seven days following your appointment, you will notice a steady reduction in the redness of your skin. While small breakouts can happen during this time, they are often relatively minor and disappear quickly as the skin expels toxins and heals.
Of course, the most exciting revelation for most clients is that the fine lines around their mouth and eyes often entirely vanish for a time, leaving a restored youthful appearance. You’ll notice that your skin now has a renewed fullness, and your complexion will almost seem to glow.
Micro-needling is a procedure that yields impressive results after just one treatment. However, for optimal results, it is recommended to complete a series of three sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, in order to give your skin the radiant youthful glow. We usually recommend that procedures be spaced out at least a month in between to allow the body to completely finish its healing process triggered by the previous session. After achieving your desired goals, it is important to undergo one treatment every 3 to 6 months for skin care maintenance.
Quite honestly, microneedling can have incredible results for the vast majority of clients. However, like all procedures, it’s essential to consult with your medical aesthetician to ensure your specific situation is a good fit for this treatment. For people with skin ailments such as active cold sores or cystic acne, micro-needling can potentially inflame the skin and cause a more severe outbreak. For anyone experiencing skin diseases, such as psoriasis or eczema, micro-needling is generally not advised.
This procedure is also not appropriate for pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding. The numbing cream used prior to the treatment is not approved for women in those conditions, and caution is advised just to be on the safe side.
No matter how noninvasive, any medical procedure has risks that clients need to be aware of before committing to treatment. In the case of micro-needling, the most common side-effect is minor skin irritation. However, some clients experience more severe reactions, such as bruising, bleeding, peeling, and in very rare occurrences, infection.
It’s worth mentioning that there are now several home options for those looking to stimulate the rejuvenating healing powers of the skin without leaving their bathrooms. And while these devices have made considerable strides over the last number of years, they very often fail to deliver noticeable results. The trouble is they simply aren’t able to develop a product that is both safe and strong enough to be used at home by an untrained person. The other problem with at-home treatments is that they are susceptible to bacterial contamination if they are not properly sterilized after each use. When you’re intentionally penetrating your body’s outer defence layer, it’s critical that you ensure you are not introducing anything that will comprise your overall health. However, it’s worth noting that low-impact rollers are great for use between sessions to continue to stimulate the skin. Just be sure to disinfect any tools you use on your skin to prevent any potential infection.
