The Rejuvenating Benefits of Dermal Fillers

When you fill your life with love, laughter, and friends, one of the side-effects is that you end up with an assortment of fine lines and wrinkles. Quite simply, as we age, and the more we enjoy life, the more creases we have to show for it.

Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way. You can savour your life to the fullest without allowing these indicators of age to have their way.

Over the last few decades, there have been many advancements in age-defying treatments. However, one of the simplest and best ways to remove the look of years from your skin is still with Dermal Fillers

Coming into use in the 1970s, dermal fillers have been getting a lot of renewed attention lately because they work.

This minimally invasive procedure introduces fillers, made of compounds that often naturally occur in the body, to smooth fine lines and restore a look of youthfulness. And while dermal fillers are not known for the radical results of some other procedures, many clients love the incredibly natural-looking effects that they get with this method. Not to mention the treatment takes effect almost instantaneously.

How Does it work?

To truly understand how Dermal Fillers erase years from your face, it’s essential to know a little bit about your skin. As the largest organ in your body, the skin is complex. It’s composed of three layers, the Epidermis, the Dermis, and the Hypodermis. These layers work together to control body temperature, remove impurities, and prevent external toxins from getting in and wreaking havoc. The Epidermis is the outside layer that we can all see. It controls the loss of water from cells and tissue and generally serves as our last line of defence. The Dermis, immediately below the surface, is primarily made up of the protein, collagen, and contains blood vessels, nerves, and hair follicles. The collagen in the Dermis forms a tight network of fibres that provides structure and elasticity to the skin. Below the Dermis, we find the Hypodermis, a layer of fat and connective tissue that contains larger blood vessels, nerves, glands, fat, and collagen cells. This crucial layer is responsible for conserving the body’s heat and protecting vital organs.

Over time, the compounds that make up these layers start to breakdown and lose volume. This natural cellular reduction means that your skin doesn’t have quite the same ability to spring back into place as it once did.

With Dermal Fillers, we are simply adding natural volume back into the layers of the skin. Laugh lines and crows feet no longer have the excess space to form, and thinning lips are restored to their youthful contour.

Understanding Dermal Fillers

One of the reasons many people are fond of Dermal Fillers is the makeup of the products themselves. While there is a range of filler options, most of them are derived from naturally occurring compounds already found in our bodies. In the case of available synthetic fillers, they are made from biocompatible compounds, which means your body readily accepts them as if they were meant to be there.

We’re going to explore three of the most common Dermal Filler options. However, if you’re considering whether this procedure might be right for you, one of our skincare specialists would be happy to discuss what options would make the most sense for your situation.

Hyaluronic Acid

While anything with acid in its name can sound scary, this natural compound is already abundantly available throughout our skin and body. Your skin uses the Hyaluronic Acid it produces to maintain hydration and preserve the elasticity of all three layers.

Effectiveness:

Hyaluronic Acid can be easily spot treated at various levels of the skin with incredible results. It can also be used anywhere from the under eyes, to lips, to cheeks, and to even hand rejuvenation, and produces excellent results. Hyaluronic Acid treatment tends to last between 6 to 12 months before the body absorbs it. The best feature of Hyaluronic Acid fillers is that it is easily dissolvable with the enzyme Hyaluronidase. As such, any unwanted or misplaced old filler, or filler complications can all be easily reversed when using Hyaluronic Acid fillers.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite

A naturally occurring compound found primarily in our bones, when injected with Calcium Hydroxylapatite or CaHA fillers, our skin immediately uses the compound to reinforce its membrane network. The extra strength it provides allows the skin to restore its elasticity, virtually eliminating any formed lines.

Effectiveness:

Calcium Hydroxylapatite works quite well on particularly deep lines and wrinkles. A stable compound, most clients find the results hold for a minimum of twelve months. Of course, one of the more interesting findings is that CaHA can stimulate natural collagen production, making it an immediate solution that is also helping to reduce the appearance of ageing longer term.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid

While this semi-permanent filler is not a naturally occurring compound in the human body, it has been used for years in the safe application of stitches. It’s also wholly biocompatible and is often reinforced with bovine collagen to provide additional structure and firmness. Before receiving Poly-L-Lactic Acid, clients do need to be tested for allergies to the bovine collagen component. However, once this test is cleared, this product is entirely safe for use when administered by a qualified professional.

Effectiveness:

Poly-L-Lactic Acid is considered a semi-permanent solution. As a synthetic filler, the body doesn’t absorb the compound, and it stays in place underneath the epidermal layer. Of course, over time, new lines and wrinkles will occur, and the filler will need to be topped up. Poly-L-Lactic Acid’s stability has meant that it is one of the few Dermal Fillers that has also been approved for smoothing acne scars.

Dermal Fillers Are an Easy Way to See what’s Possible

For many people looking to reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles, or to beautify facial features, Dermal Fillers are a great place to start. The effects are visible almost immediately, and there is little to no downtime following your appointment. And even though the results happen quickly, they last for quite a while. Depending on the filler you select, the treatment can be effective from six months to twelve months and even up to two-years.

For many people who are new to age-defying treatments, Dermal Fillers provide an excellent first step. The natural compounds used help ensure a gradual transition for anyone worried about the process looking too drastic. After a Dermal Filler appointment, clients look refreshed and like they’ve had a few years gently rolled away. And best of all, they can head right back to work, out on the town, or show off their invigorated look at the gym.

Of course, if you decide you’d like to incorporate either Botox or Dysport treatments, Dermal Fillers are compatible with both of these procedures.

Adverse Reactions

As with any procedure, you need to be informed of any possible adverse reactions. With Dermal Fillers, most clients experience no side effects. However, slight redness, swelling, pain, bruising, itching, and rash can occur around the injection sites. These reactions usually clear within 7 to 14 days. In very rare cases, more severe side effects such as vascular occlusion may occur. Your medical professional will be able to walk you through any risks and explain the strict procedures we employ to minimize any risks and issues for our clients.
